We are in Amsterdam and we are visiting the Anne Frank Museum. I want to tell you about Anne Frank and her family.
Anne Frank was born on June 12 1928. The whole family was Jewish and back then the law said they can’t do that and they can’t do this. All of the Jews had to wear a yellow star on their arm to say that they are Jews. When World War 2 started the Nazis were in charge and they wanted to get rid of all the Jewish people. They were going to bring them to a concentration camp where they had to work. The Nazis went around and collected all the Jews except for the ones who went into hiding. So the Frank family did go into hiding.
Then another family came and they also stayed with the Franks. That family was the Van Pels family. The Frank family and the Van Pels family made a bookcase that can pull in and out and behind it was their hiding place. They had a bathroom a kitchen and room for all of them to sleep in. They stayed there for 2 years. There was some people who knew, and they were helpers for the shop downstairs. They helped build the hiding place for them. They had to put black curtains on their windows so nobody would see them. Anne put pictures on her wall in her bedroom so it would be prettier for her. They were not allowed to run the water use the bathroom or move around at 8:00 am because that is when the store opened. Then someone betrayed them and told the Nazis where they were hiding.
When they got caught they all went to the concentration camp. The dad survived the war and died at the age of 91. The mom died on January 6 1945. Margo (sister of Anne) died from Typhus and shortly after Anne died at the age of 15. She died from Typhus too. Otto Frank, her dad was the one who published Anne’s diary.
When we went to the museum we saw that same bookcase that they used as the door. It was the real bookcase that we walked through. It even had the same books in it from the war. The hiding place was bigger than what I thought it would be. When i was watching the movies of the Hollocaust i felt really sad for all of the Jews because it was such a really bad thing that happened.
After the museum was done my Dad bought me the diary that Anne’s dad published to learn more about her.
