Today we went to the Kawiti glowworm caves. When we got there it was closed but the girl who worked there was nice and she did a tour with us. When we were standing by the cave it was really cold. The girl came with a torch because it was black. Before we went in the cave she told us about a story. The story was about a women and how they found the cave. The women that lived In the cave was beside the workers house and the workers house was beside the cave. One day they saw that their sweet potatoes were missing. They also saw smoke coming from the cave so they went in and they saw the women and she became part of their family. That was the story.

Now we should get back to the glowworms. When we went into the cave the girl that gave us the tour stopped at a point and told us this is where the women that lived in the cave had her kitchen. We went a bit further in the cave and stopped again and she turned off the the lights and turned on a flash light. She showed us a eel in the water and It was really long and black like a bat. She turned the light back on and walked a bit more.
When she turned it off we saw a lot of glowing things hanging from the top of the cave. She said that they were the glowworms. It was like looking up at the night sky. The glowing spot comes from the back end of the worm. The way they catch their food is they make a line of saliva. It is sticky so the bugs can not get out. The reason why they fly to the saliva is because they like light. The glowworms spread out in the cave because they do not like each other.
The glow worms look like galaxies of stars in the sky at night.
What she also said was that the brighter the glowworm is the hungrier it is. Then when we were leaving she told us that they count their glowworms and they have 10,605 glowworms. It was really cool to learn about them.

Fantastic Vlog. We have been waiting for you to write one. What type of insect is the glow worm? Is it a larva or an adult? And are they only in New Zealand? The picture in the cave was stunning. They do look like the stars in a night sky.

Hi Grandpa how are you. I miss you. The glowworm is a larva. It did look like the night sky and at one part she said they called it the Milky Way. There were 5 different family’s of glowworms and they mostly live in New Zealand but also all over the world.We all think that you and grandma would love it here. You could rent a little hippy camper and travel around New Zealand with us. There is so much here that you would love. You will love my next VLOG.
