This is a story about Hawaiian cultures………

Hula dancing

I went to hula with my cousin Jaida! I was a bit scared because I was the only young one there. But after a wile I started to like it. Then we stared to learn dances to go with the song and it got a bit hard. But I got good at it and we did this song about the lava and the volcano. But I like the song ‘hula with me’ better.  The cool thing about hula dancing is that when you move your hands and hips it is expressing story’s and legends from long, long ago.

Vea joined Jaida on one of her Hula dance lessons and loved it!

Hike at Waimea valley

We also did this hike were you got to see where the Hawaiian’s used to live in the olden days. The houses were called kauhale. They were not that big at all and the top was made out of straw. The hawaiian’s used wood and shark teeth to fight with. The wood was made out of koa wood and it is a good type because it is made for canoe. So it must be a good material because it is so strong.

The fire show

On our last week there we went to a fire show and there was hula girls and boys but the boys were only kids and at the show we had to stand up and hula with them. Then when it was getting to the end of the show there was a guy that played and danced with fire. He let the fire touch his leg and then one more guys came out and they were playing catch with the fire together. It was a good night.

Things about Pele

When we went to the volcano there was a museum and we went in it and there was a picture of this girl called Pele. She lives in the volcano and she is the fire god. She made a boy into a tree and his friend was looking for him one day and could not find him and they wanted to be together so the only way for that was to make her into a Lehua flower that grows on that tree and if you pick a petal from the flower it might rain which is the girl crying.

Lei making

The thing people do in Hawaii for peoples birthday or meeting them at the airport is to give them a lei. How you make that lei is you get a certain type of flower and that flower is called the plumeria. Then after you do that you take dental floss and tie the dental floss to the needle. After that you start to take the flowers poke them on the needle but you poke the needle in the midle part of the flower. Then you put 5 more flowers on until it reaches the end of the needle. After you have put all 5 flowers on the needle you start to pull them down off of the needle. You bring them down to the bottom of the dental floss. When the last flower touches the bottom of the needle then you know you are done and you tie the ends of the dental floss together and you put it softly in a bag and put it in the fridge until it is time to give the lei to the person.

    Vea,
I loved your description of how to make a lei. You said they are made from plumeria flowers. Is plumeria endemic to Hawaii? Also, did you know that big sticky the plant in our living room that you know so well is a cousin to plumeria. It bloomed for the first time in 30 years right after you guys left and, guess what? It’s flowers look just like plumeria. But there were only two flowers. It would take many many big stickies to make one lei.
    Miss you.

Hi Grandpa and Grandma how are you? I miss you. No the pulmeria is not endemic to Hawaii. Wow i did not know that about big sticky and in 30 years i would have loved to see that. Well lets hope that big sticky keeps on making them. I love you.
